I know the connection, but can't figure out why it is negative. I like that food. it's southern cooking.

I don't really know either, think it might have something to do with minstrel shows where they used to do black face. I remember as a kid seeing a picture of a little black boy, with this big toothy grin sitting on a tree stump barefoot with a piece of watermelon bigger than his head. Back then I didn't even understand that it was a bad thing but I didn't like it.

Over time, the watermelon became a symbol of the broader denigration of black people. It became part of the image perpetuated by a white culture bent upon bolstering the myth of superiority by depicting the inferior race as lazy, simple-minded *****ninnies interested only in such mindless pleasures as a slice of sweet watermelon.
the only reason I can really think of fried chicken being negative, is that it might be looked at as slave food. deep frying was a method of tenderizing the though cuts of meat the slaves were offered. I wouldn't mind someone stereotyping me for eating fried chicken. who got the bojangles?

apparently you didn't see the comic joke with lipstick on a pig among others.
Yup, lipstick on a pig when referencing the Bush and McCain economic policies in a stump speech (a simple google would do) had so much to do with Palin...and is an apt analogy for the Obama food stamp...
but oh so delicious. I eat greens too in case anyone wants to make fun of me. whitey eats his greens and he even uses wiley's greens seasoning. that stuff is the BOMB!

Hey, I like grits, that is if they are prepared correctly.
I post this only in answer to a question I have seen raised. There are some things on the page that may offend but, I offer it only as explanation of the connection to negative connotations
