G. Gordon Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in...Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in "if necessary"; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention...Liddy has donated $5,000 to McCain's campaigns since 1998, including $1,000 in February 2008. In addition, McCain has appeared on Liddy's radio show during the presidential campaign, including as recently as May..
I saw that last night... and honestly... for a second I thought McCain's heart stopped. It was brilliant television. Some could say it might have been unfair for Letterman to drop that bomb without advising McCain first... since McCain really can't talk about any issue unless he has extensive campaign briefing on it. But I've been against this whole, desperate 'association' mess to beging with... and what's good for the goose is good for the gander. And McCain had his gander fried by a talk show host.
There's nothing unfair about it whatsoever. Letterman took the opportunity to reveal McCain's hypocrisy which people deserve to know about. The difference is McCain really is a buddy of terrorist, murderer and ex-con Liddy.
"did you have a relationship with Gordon Liddy?'
"uh, uh, I met him. Who? Gordon Liddy?"
after the commercial break, realizing he can't lie about this:
"I'm not ashamed to say I know Gordon Liddy".
Notice also how McCain tried his best to brush off Letterman's request that Palin be a guest on his show.
His 'association' with Liddy doesn't make McCain any better or any worse than Obama and Ayers.... but it does go far in showing what a fantastically bad strategy it was to try to devalue someone's character through personal associations in the first place.
