Today's polls: McCain on life support. This is not the time when John McCain can afford a bad polling day. And yet he's had perhaps his worst one of the year.

The national trackers were essentially a push -- three moved toward Obama, two toward McCain, two were flat -- but the action today is at the state level. And boy, there is a lot of action: 29 new state polls enterring our database. And many of them contain great news for Obama. As a result of all of this, there is now no perceptible rebound for John McCain; in fact, the race may still be trending toward Obama, although the safer assumption is that it's flat. Meanwhile, Obama's electoral position appears as strong as ever. John McCain's chances of winning the election have dwindled to 3.7%, down from 6.5% yesterday.

Well if he's on life support, can we just pull the plug and put him out of his misery?

Well, no, that is neither ethical nor moral. I can't help but think of the native peoples of Alaska, however, who chose to wander out onto an ice floe when they believed that they could no longer contribute in a positive way to their community. Senator McCain should perhaps, retire to one of his many homes, along with his wife, friends and supporters, and allow real progress to occur in our government.

I am sure on January 20th, all your lives will improve almost immediately, in fact, without even lifting a finger. Right?

Funny, 538 doesn't show these; It will be close, which is a huge surprise, considering this year is a democrat one.

Now that seems a little unlikely. I am, however, looking forward to a move towards more "middle class friendly" policies.

Every state you show there, outside of PA, is traditionally red...yet McCain is fighting just to hold on, that in itself is very telling.

It won't be close, it will be more of an Obama landslide.

I'm guessing Obama will win the popular vote by about 5-7 percent (which is a landslide) and he will win the Electoral count with 340+.

but-but-but today was supposed to be his great chance, since Obama's not on the campaign trail. Oh dear....
