What IS wrong with Medicare? Older people seem to be quite satisfied with it. What I like about it is that there is no 20% and upwards profit that must be paid to cover executives' $60 million bonuses and dividends for the insurance company's shareholders. Medicare is far cheaper to administer than insurance, and there is no greedy middle man to hold onto a profit on my wellness. Remember, insurers do not deliver any care, they just negotiate with doctors for low low prices and refuse to treat as many people as possible. That's how they make that profit they are after. Its sure not through efficiency. I think that is a proven fact at this point.

My sister lived in the UK and loved their healthcare system, she is appalled at ours here though she has insurance. But its so expensive for her family and there is a $2000 deductible for hospital stays so her son's birth cost a lot, in addition, they avoided rushing her son to the emergency room once because they couldn't afford that deductible again the following year.

Again, ask yourself why we need to all of us pay that profit when we could just be paying for the health care instead. That would already cover tons more people. Cutting out the emergency room treatment scheme that is so prevalent in this country would also save a lot.

Isn't a the pre-existing condition scheme the biggest catch 22 ever? How are we going for this people?!

Why do you find it so hard to believe that Canadian heath care works just fine? I am 68 years old, have lived in Canada all my life. I have raised six kids, and been married twice. All of the medical issues we have had over these many years were taken care of efficiently and promptly and believe me when I say there were a lot of them.

There is no wait for any life threatening illness, not only that but I have never waited longer than ten minutes in my doctors office...We do it at less than half the cost per person than the US cost for health care...It's time to start dismissing all the negative rumors about long waits and high taxes...They are just that...uninformed rumors.

It would be better for us both if you ask that of the people who claim to be your fellow Canadians in this thread who are in conflict with your statements on Canadian health care.

My doctor is waiting for me when I enter the exam room. My son was born 8 years ago and they were great. They did not hestiate to admit my wife 6 weeks early due to a medical condition. My son was early and spent 9 days in intensive care and we paid nothing. I could go on, but I am happy with what we have.
That's one of the reasons while I don't have Tri-Care. Well, I was looking at Tri-Care web site, and it seems that it's much cheaper now that back when I retired for the military, but the waiting list at the military hospital in Fairbanks is long, even to pick-up pre-called medicine. They do take people in right away on emergencies.

With my employer's insurance, I can go to my doctor right away for an emergency, or just to see her for other problems. I can also have my teeth cleaned every six months, and eyewear every year. Also, thee is a "Wellness" program I can participate in and receive annual physical exams and tests free of charge, discounted medicine, and stuff like that. With Tri-Care I may not always be able to see a doctor or a specialist when I go to a military hospital.

Yeah only an idiot who knows nothing about Canada's terrible healthcare system would say how great it is. I was just talking to someone who has no idea what's wrong with him, thinks it might be Chronic Fatigue, or it could be a thyroid problem, he doesn't even know, and the nearest he can schedule a doctor is 6 months from now. That's Canada's healthcare system. It's terrible.

There should be NO socialist healthcare programs whatsoever. You want healthcare, just like everything else in the entire world, YOU PAY FOR IT! If you can't afford to pay, just like everything else in the entire world, YOU DON'T GET IT!!!!

I have read different versions of how the Canadian Health Care works and how much it costs. In some reports, it sounds great most of the time, while in others not so great. In relation to the Health Care system in Canada, at least it's cost in taxes, it seems that it's lower than in the US, but climbing rapidly, at least for the average person or family:

I spoke with my neighbor a little more tonight about Canadas health care system. He told me when they had there youngest son, he was born with a leaking tear duct(or something like that). If they were to have it operated on in Canada, it would have been a 7 month wait. They came to the states and had it done within a month.

I've been fighting with doctors and insurance companies for two years to have my son diagnosed and I live in the US. I had to wait three months for a neurological appointment for him.

Gee...I wonder why so many vets come running to private hospitals saying, "I can't take the VA incompetence/delays anymore!" Or why so many of my parents' friends freaked out when they were forced onto Medicare when they turned 65 (many lost their primary doctors, too). Or why many docs/nurses I know from many socialized medicine countries say they wish they could work here/get their own care here. Or why private insurance/private hospitals are now a booming business in countries with socialized medicine.

Must be b/c of all the excellent service.

You get what you pay for. Health care is like anything else. If you don't make it a priority in your own life, don't foist your decisions on the rest of our wallets.
