Neither. These are not things that are solved by the president. You better wake up congress and the house, plus the state governments. Then you better find paying jobs for the 12 million who need and want them.

I believe that Mc Cain would be the better person to resolve the issue in the original post. Unfortunately, it's the only problem he might solve. If Mc Cain won, we would be stuck in an endless war while this country falls apart. We would have four more years of the same failed policies. And since the illegal issues is the only major issue I disagree with Obama on, I'll swallow it and vote for him and pray he'll be able to resolve the economic issues as he plans to.

The funny thing is, all of the illegal immigrants around here are doing the dirty, nasty, unsafe, back-breaking jobs no white or black person wants to do. The people on this board and around the country who complain loudest about illegal immigrants would never do the work these illegals are doing, for double or triple the pay.

Sadly neither one of them plans to do squat about this problem. Another fine example of how badly the Republocrats have blown it with their choice.

Cheap labor Republicans have quietly encouraged illegal immigration. The presence of millions of subminimum wage workers keeps pay and benefits lower for all the rest of us. Plus, taxpayers support illegals through medical care, housing, and other government handouts because employers offer these people no benefits. Chalk those billions up to corporate welfare.

Exactly. Because the whole situation is a no-win 'hot potato'. No matter WHAT useful thing might be done, whoever is seen as being behind those actions is going to be crucified by significant voting blocs in upcoming elections. Both sides are dancing on a thin wire because they know that to jump off onto either side will mean losing votes, first and foremost on Nov 4th and then during the subsequent 4 years.

I know this sounds awful but I am SURE that both sides are secretly thankful that the current unexpected economic crisis has instantly and effectively removed the illegal-immigration Hot Potato issue from the minds of 90% of the American voting public at this particular stage of the campaign. Both sides have gotten a reprieve because NOTHING is so guaranteed to grab the passions of the American public as the immediate loss of real dollars either going into or out of their own pockets.

When Hoover promised 'a chicken in every pot' he knew this effect precisely. Our current economic crisis is an issue of 'having an empty pot versus a pot with a chicken in it' .... a situation that hits every voter where they live. On the other hand, the illegal immigration crisis is more like 'having a smaller versus a larger chicken in your pot' because people do not see the effect directly in their household budget. In other words, since they still have A CHICKEN they think they are not affected. Unfortunately it may only be when that chicken shrinks to the size of a sparrow that they will wake up and realize what has been happening.

Not here. When you find a way to keep illegal immigrants from south of the border on their side of the border, you will have found the way to double/triple the cost of most of the food you buy at the grocery store. Not to mention all of the other non-food related services they perform. Good luck with that one . . .

Neither candidate will solve it. Both are spineless when it comes to solving a real problem, especially if it may cost them votes with a specific portion of the population for being un-PC. Everyone dodges this question in relation to rising health insurance, car insurance, overpopulated public schools, etc.. but when more than 1 in 20 people in this country are here illegally, welcome to the reality that we all have to pay the bill for their presence, and not just in lost jobs. What about identity theft? That's how so many of them are able to pass paperwork to get many jobs in the first place - by using someone else's SSN/identity.

I'll go even further and say that as a whole, both PARTIES are spineless when it comes to solving ANY problem that will alienate any significant voting bloc.

The only time anything meaningful ever gets done is when the number of voters who clearly benefit from a particular solution becomes so much larger than those who do not, as to be worth sacrificing the 'losing' bloc's loyalty at the polls. And in many cases, just substitute 'special interests' for 'voters/voting bloc'.

Until that Magic Level of voting bloc size is reached on any issue, politicians never do anything but dance around and spout politicobabble patter while they postpone any real action. To expect anything else to happen is just unrealistic...
