I guess then you think that if the medics are overwhelmed on the battle lines, then an officer who is near should run home and not assist?

Meh. I was in the service and "it's not my job" was never an acceptable excuse for leaving your buddies.

That's not true!
The Forrestal fire changed how naval vessels fight fires.
After that disaster all hands were trained to fight fires on board. Before that, it was the duty of damage control.
Pilots are not even considered crew of the carrier anyway. They are a flight group attached to a carrier.

Beyond all that. I can only assume that you were there on the Forrestal to have such intimate knowledge of where, what, and how McCain reacted to the fire.
