I had the opportunity to meet the Dixie Chicks a few weeks before they made their comments that got them in so much trouble. They were spokespersons for one of my company's brands and I was charged with hosting them before they performed for a private event.
They are smart, patriotic and outspoken women. They were sincerely troubled by the events at that time. I don't know that it was their place to speak out in the manner they did, but I was sorry that they took so much heat for their comments.
And I too would love to see these talented ladies perform at a presidential event.
I like the Dixie Chicks. Liked them before they said what they said and liked them afterwards. They told the truth regardless of where they told it. I also like country music. However, as progressive as country music has become, you still have some narrow-minded folks, and I doubt the fact that they see now that the Dixie Chicks were right they will admit it or change their minds.
Dixie Chicks make nice? No.

Reason: additional comment
I think the Dixie Chicks should re-record that song "Landslide" with slightly modified lyrics. Obviously it's a song about the republican voters coming to grips with the loss of the election:
Well, I've been afraid of changes cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
And McCain's getting older
And I'm getting older, too
Well, I'm getting older too
So, take your yard signs and take 'em down
We climbed a mountain, now we turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down
Yeah, the landslide brought me down
I'm sad about the Dixie Chicks. I really enjoyed their music, but what they (mostly Natalie Maines)did was unforgivable, as far as I'm concerned.
They went to another country and bad-mouthed our country, and then they seemed so proud of it. Then, they were too stupid to realize that they were alienating most of their audience, by being unrepentant. At this point, even if they apologized for what they did, no one would believe it was sincere.
I am not a country music fan and thus had never heard of the Dixie Chicks before their outburst. I didn't buy their CDs before and wouldn't buy them now. I am also not a big fan of Bush. However, he is our President and thus deserves our respect. I understand that some people feel a great deal of hostility towards Bush, but I feel that Bush bashing should not be done abroad. I also feel that if I paid to go to a concert and was subjected to a political tirade I would demand a refund as I left. Entertainers have every right to their political opinions but I pay to see them perform, not to hear their opinions.
Doesn't matter, the "Dixie Chicks" are toast. Whether they were right or wrong to make anti-Bush remarks in England is a moot point. The music industry as a whole greatly disapproves of artists using their popularity to make political statements. The reasons are complex but studies have shown that artists jeopardize all that the industry invests in them by polarizing the record buying audience. Artists typically lose 40-60% of their fan base by taking a publicized political stance.
The Dixie Chicks once were one of the top grossing concert touring groups with a long list of pre-concert sell outs. Their most recent concert tour was canceled because of poor ticket sales. They turned their back on Nashville and said they were not country (basically telling the country music industry to kiss their collective arses). They lost their original record contract and were forced to settle for a smaller contract with a minor label. They were removed from the GOO and have not been invited back. They tried unsuccessfully to change genres by going from country to pop.
They are still a very talented group but they have no audience to preform for. Country fans will no longer buy their records or atend their concerts. Pop fans say they are old and sound and look to much like "mothers" to be cool.
Toast
