Hate crime laws have been on the books since the 1960s. It's only because this law was signed by Obama and is associated with non-heterosexuals that it's got the right-wingers going berserk.

Edit: The above poster makes a good point, but obviously that hasn't happened at the state level. A lot of discrimination persists against homosexuals that would no longer be tolerated against women or minorities or whomever else. So, in an ideal world, you're correct. In our barbaric world, I guess we need special laws.

Those are already crimes on the books. I just find it odd that Congress wants to also protect pedophiles under hate crime laws.
