Tough call. I guess my top 3 of all time would be George Carlin, Bill Cosby and Steve Martin, with Eddie Murphy as a close runner up. They're all so different it's hard to say that one is better than another.

Carlin, Dangerfield and Pryor for me. Bill Hicks was probably the greatest commentator though I didn't find him especially funny. Greg Giraldo was the best of the new school comedians, followed by Jeff Ross.

George Carlin
Louis CK

The third is a tie between:
Bill Burr
Steven Wright
Mitch Hedberg

I was going to throw Daniel Tosh into the list, and I do think he is still funny, but even his well delivered shock humor grows stale at times. Honorable mention to Doug Stanhope. Fearless comic. Also one to John Pinette. This guy is hysterical and pretty energetic for a heavyset guy.

My first a favorite comedian is George Carlin. For a number of reasons. He was very mulit-talented. He was a great narrator for the show Thomas and Friends. Who would have thought, the dude who used the 7 curse words on Tv, would actually be good a narrating a kid show?
Secondly, he took real life situations like politics and explained them correctly and accurately, and made sense, and was still funny. Who could do that?

My second is Richard Prior- He's great

Third- ?

Don Rickles

Alan King

Phyllis Diller

I think the best have to have staying power. A career of 50 years or more. Many mentioned in previous posts are just a flash in the pan.

My top three faves would be: George Carlin, Don Rickles, and Billy Crystal. But there are so many more who I also truly enjoyed over the years: Chris Rock, George Lopez, Josh Blue, Ellen DeGeneres, Phyliss Diller, Roseanne Barr, Eddie Murphy, Wanda Sykes, Larry David, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Doug Stanhope, Bill Hicks, Mitch Hedberg, Robin Williams, Redd Foxx...

I watched that Kings of Comedy tour one time on Comedy Central and Cedric the Entertainer had me in tears of laughter with his skit. I haven't seen him in any other stand up shows, but he was hilarious in that one.

Richard Pryor
