For people who were in their 20s and 30s in the last decade and can appreciate somewhat politically incorrect Afrocentric humor, Dave may well be the best comedian of that period. I do agree with others that there are numerous other comedians to compare him with. Chappelle's humor certainly isn't for everyone.

This are my reasons to think that Dave Chapelle is the funniest American comedian ever.
- Had the balls to have as his first comedy sketch on his show a sketch about the klan
- For every character he played, he could easily make a comedy movie.
- His originality was plain and simple off the chart

One of my favorite sketches - Tyrone Biggums in "Fear Factor"
Pretty much, yes. I adore him, so funny and outspoken about his beliefs. And when it got to be too much, he retired, leaving everyone wanting more.

My favorite routine was the one with Wayne Brady LMAO

Charlie Murphy is pretty danged funny, too

That's my second favorite Chappelle routine, but things started going down hill for poor Dave after that. Imagine trying to perform your stand up, and having a bunch of drunken college aged bro culture types screaming at the stage, "I'm Rick James, *****!" over and over and over and over and over again.

No wonder Dave snapped and moved back to Yellow Springs

I'm an old white man and I like Dave. Not the greatest of all time but very good. Rick James and Bi racial draft are 2 of his best.

I just watched this and blew my drink across the room. Good thing the big boss had left.

Not a chance. His act got old, then went to scripted movies like almost all the others. Like fish, their routines stunk after a while.

Now George Carlin, actually IMPROVED with time, like fine wine. Didn't need movies.

Paul Mooney.

He's very underrated, but his jokes make me laugh (and blush if it was even possible).

This. I don't think Dave Chappelle is the funniest stand-up comedian ever, but the 'Rick James True Hollywood Stories' may have been the funniest 1/2 hour ever on television. When I think of the "funniest comedians ever" I think of bits or segments that have had me doubled over in laughter so hard I couldn't breathe. Comedians that immediately come to mind:

1. Gilbert Gottfried (notable performances: imitating Ice-T on Hugh Hefner's Comedy Central Roast and his Andrew Dice Clay imitation back in the day)

2. Andrew Dice Clay back in the day! (notable performance: Italian Hollywood Stars -John Travolta, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Eric Roberts - on a Picnic together)

3. JB Smoove (notable performance: Batman whipping Robin with his utility belt for saying "Holy..." too much!)

4. Martin Lawrence characters (Jerome the Player and Old Otis the Security Guard especially)

5. Damon Wayans sketches on "In Living Color" (too many to list: Homey the Clown, Antoine the Homeless Guy with the pickle jar, Oswald the improperly literate inmate, Blaine from the "Men on.." sketches, Louis Farrakhan in the "Wrath of Khan" where the Nation of Islam takes over the Starship Enterprise, etc.)

6. Jim Carrey sketches on "In Living Color" (also too many to list but "Fire Marshal Bill" was the best - "LET ME SHOW YOU SOMETHING!")

7. The King: EDDIE MURPHY (His "Raw" is the best standup special of all time and all of the characters from "Coming to America" are timelessly funny; if you saw the movie and still don't use some of those quotes to this day then you really need to REWATCH that entire film)

Agreed. He got a little TOO cynical in his old age, but in his prime...criticizing the "California Raisins" for being racist...classic.

But that also made me think of Aries Spears and his imitation of Paul Mooney. Spears is also underrated and arguably the best impressionist of all time.

Oh had to edit: how could I mention "Comedy Central Roasts" and not throw Jeffrey Ross's hat into the ring?!?
