I think this needs a poll. I want to know who the general consensus considers the least funny. Obviously, we need to put Dane Cook and Larry the Cable Guy on the list (because they were the most commonly mentioned that I noticed).
I also noticed that Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, Carlos Mencia, George Carlin, Kathy Griffin, Rosie O'Donnell and Robin Williams were mentioned a lot. Maybe we should include some of them. The hard thing is narrowing down the list to the least popular. Maybe I should have made a list while I was reading these responses...
For starters (PS I'm talking people who generally seem well liked, not just "I've heard of them"):
Whoopi Goldberg (although she was good in "Ghost")
Kathy Griffin
Will Farrell
Maggie Cho
Rosanne Barr
David Chapelle
That dork who walks around with a knit cap on and goofy smile and talks to people - how or why on Earth anyone would consider that even remotely amusing or anything other than idiotic I've no idea
I could "almost" agree with you. How you don't find Dave Chappelle funny is beyond me.
Oh hell yeah! I also think Robin Williams is overrated. He makes me nervous just watching him. He's all over the place. I love his movies though...just don't care for him in standup.
I disagree on that one. I like Dane Cook, and I've always been a huge fan of Carlin, Bruce, Pryor and other comedians of that generation. While Cook has been accused of stealing material, I have news for you, they all do at some point in there career. What makes Cook funny is his delivery and inflection.
There were a lot of critics who thought Eddie Murphy was copying Richard Pryor, but he was still funny doing his own material.
A lot of people like Hicks and Hedberg, I didn't think they were all that funny. Hicks was a lighter version of Sam Kinison (who was one of my favorites), while Hedberg was doing his Steven Wright impersonations. Difference being, Wright is funny, Hedberg was not.
One of my favorites of today is Brian Regan.
Ones I do not like:
Jimmy Fallon
Wanda Sykes
Bill Hicks
Rosie
Letterman
Martin Lawrence
Thanks for reminding me about Jimmy Fallon. Seriously UN-FUNNY.
The white-haired guy with a long nose who was the main charachter in Roxanne (1987), have his name on the tip of the tongue...never found him very funny, or maybe i'ts just me...
Oh hell yeah! I also think Robin Williams is overrated. He makes me nervous just watching him. He's all over the place. I love his movies though...just don't care for him in standup.
That's the problem with this thread, context.
Stand up, sit-com, monologue performer, movie...each medium requires a different skill set and some comedic talents don't come across in some as well as they do in others.
Rosanne Barr was was great on her sitcom and sucked in her post sitcom stand-up. Rosie O'Donnell was absolutely brilliant in "League of Our Own" and sucked on the View. No one, and I mean no one top Whoopi Goldberg in her one woman play that launched her into fame, but is she a comedian or an Oscar winning dramatic performer. I could go on. Additionally you have to judge each by where they are in their careers. Eddie Murphy is very different kind of comedian than the one that he was when he started. Folks change as do their talents.
Having said that, Will Farrell has never been funny, but that's me.
