Whole Foods Market Coming to Eugene | KEZI

It won't change my shopping habits; I prefer to purchase my overpriced stuff from Market of Choice, but it'll give the local stores some competition and provide some jobs.

I heard it called "Markup of Choice"!

For home improvement, there is "Home Deplete Your Bank Account!" (Seems like $100 every time you walk in the door.)

Lol, common nickname for Whole Foods is Whole Paychecks, Home Depot is (at least around my house) Home Despot.

When I lived near a Whole Foods, I did like their deli - they used quality ingredients in things like chicken salad, not industrial vat mayo like most of the regular grocery chains.

They might compete with Market of Choice, but the long-time concern was that WF opening would siphon business away from the smaller 'whole food' stores: Capella, Kiva, Sundance.

Particularly with the downtown location it could pull foot traffic away from the Kiva. Harder to say about auto traffic.

Kiva is going nowhere. They have been there a long time and are well financed.

Anything bringing jobs to the area sounds good to me.
Well, maybe not anything but...

Anyways, right downtown, huh?
Must've been an extravagant venture.
Real Estate that close to all the action...

Downtown makes sense with the growth of multi use buildings in the downtown core. Many of those tenants are whole food customers and they will be the only market in the core area.

Might not even be that extravagant if they're getting support from the city. As I recall this was floated back in 2007 or so, and the deal at that point hinged on the Giustina's being able to swap private/public land.

I haven't seen the details of the new plan, but the Giustina's are still involved in making it happen. So I'd expect they're still getting something out of the deal.

Now, that said, public support for private development can pay public dividends on occasion, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that this isn't just a straight-up lease at market cost.

Downtown land is actually cheaper than mall or shopping center.
