We are planning a driving trip in July that may take us through Southwestern Poland (Budapest to Krakow to Wroclaw to Prague). Does anyone have some "must see" tips for that area? Historic sites, restaurants, bars.
No, I've been to Poland but just along the German border. I did really like it though, and the people were friendly.
I am pretty jealous of you about this trip. I would LOVE to go to Krakow!
Prague is fabulous. I also really loved Brno - it is a hidden jewel in my opinion. I loved the little villages of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
If you're interested in historical trivia, you may want to read "Schindler's List" before you go (the book, as usual, is much better and much more detailed than the movie). Oskar Schindler was from Brno and lived in Krakow for many years.

Well, I don't remember Olomouc, but it's a smaller city than Brno, which has really exploded in population over the past twenty years. It may be more picturesque.
Speaking of picturesque, we spent a day in Jihlava, which is about an hour southeast of Prague. Now THAT is a beautiful little city of about 50,000. We didn't spend the night there, but I'm sure there are some decent hotels there. The main thing I remember about that city is the charming little streets, the very hospitable and courteous people, and the wide array of high quality costume and semi precious stone jewelry.

I liked Olomouc - if you do go, check out the plane bar! It's an old Soviet plane that has been converted into a bar. I was there about 5 years ago and it was a nice break from the tourist rush of Prague (which no longer is the hidden gem I was promised when I went!). Zakopane offers an interesting look at Poland as well. It's a ski resort town and absolutely gorgeous, even if you're not a skiier, hiker, or caver! The mountain culture you get there is very different than the more urban culture of Krakow, Budapest, and Prague. Kutna Hora has the bone church in the Czech Republic and is worth a stop en route. The town itself is a little more lowkey. Of course on the way to Krakow, you must stop at Auschwitz. Give yourself a full day there and to recover after, if you can.
When I visited, it was on a 3 week backpacking trip through Prague, Olomouc, Krakow, Zakopane, Budapest, and Vienna. In all honesty, knowing what I know now, I would have skipped the 3 days in Vienna and instead spent more time in Krakow and visited Bratislava in Slovakia. Vienna felt very expensive and a little boring (mostly because the large number of museums were out of my price range - I could only afford to go to one). Friends I met in transit ended up cutting their time in Vienna short and moved onto Salzberg, which they were much bigger fans of.

I agree with you. I much prefer Salzburg over Vienna. Friendlier people as well as much less expensive and pretentious. And while you're there you can toodle about thirty minutes west and see Berchtesgaden, Hitler's Eagles Nest, etc. I'd definitely cut Vienna short to do that instead.

I figured, with all the negative press my country is getting lately, someone should remind the public opinion a country is more than a bunch of crazy politicians (that probably won't last in power anyway, but that's a different topic), it's also history, nature, people.
