Catalonia and Scotland function in the same way, except Catalonia has even more devolution and the majority of people speak Catalan as their first language (except in Barcelona), whereas in Scotland, the vast majority speak English as their first language, with a minority Scottish Gaelic-speaking population, and a few million who speak Scots as a second language (and it's basically just a variant of English). They are not too different - both are fiercely proud, both are considered nations within a nation, but it seems Catalans are more desperate to break away from Spain than Scotland is from the UK - they're willing to go on the streets to show how much they want to leave. I think Catalonia is more likely to leave than Scotland is.

If we leave, that means less EU Objective One money for Eastern Europe. Remember, you guys are net beneficiaries of EU funding, but we are net contributors.

No, we are not. Eastern Europe could benefit from EU funding, but we don't for reasons like bureaucracy and corruption. Romania has the worst EU funds absorption, giving to EU much more than it gets. Then a lot of the active population migrated to West, all sort of taxes and prices rose up to "catch up" with the EU regulations but the incomes didn't ..
