Someone in France wrote a book about it last year. Here's a related article:
French culture: Bleak chic | The Economist

That author blames is on the culture teaching everyone there to be pessimistic. I think that's kind of a chicken-and-egg situation, though. Maybe French literature, films, and so on just reflect the problem rather than being the cause.

I've heard that France has more people taking Prozac per capita than anywhere else in the world. Wonder if it'll make any difference?

One thing I envy about Europe is that the average person can afford to live in the urban core. In America if you're not wealthy you really can only live in the suburban sprawl or rural areas.

One thing about the younger generation is that their American dream is no longer a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence and 2 kids. It's moving to an affluent urban core with nightclubs and many amenities and a short trip to work. Gas prices are high and people just don't want to commute 2 hours to work by car anymore.

Oh really? So you think people are either living in big mansions or living in housing projects in the slums?

I love to visit cities like London, etc., but as for living in a city any more, no thanks! I love living in a pretty, quiet, safe (semi-rural) area with access to a big city within about an hour and half.

It's not true anymore. France is average now. Nordic countries are in the top.

It's maybe because they take antidepressants that they have lower suicide rates.
