It's not the turkey, you can put it on a bun. It's the side dishes, like green bean casserole and shrimp dip, that really disgust me.

This tradition hasn't come to Spain yet. I don't know anybody who celebrates it.

Not everyone makes green bean casserole. You are so right though, It's disgusting. I've never seen shrimp dip.

Irene, the US is a huge country with tons of diversity. This may be a tradition with the people you know, but lots and lots of Americans don't follow this at all. Many families eat both on both days, many families eat neither on both days, and many families eat turkey on Christmas as well as Thanksgiving, or ham only or they have a roast or fish or WHATEVER.

I know that turkey is traditional on Thanksgiving, but it is very common to also have it on Christmas, or to have ham on Thanksgiving. Our family traditionally has a ham every Thanksgiving for instance.

Thanksgiving is more than just Turkey and football. I actually prefer Thanksgiving to Christmas. All of the food and family time but less of the pressure of gifts for Christmas. Thanksgiving is awesome.
Our family often remarks on this as well.

When little kids are present (and thankfully we have a lot of them in our family) Christmas can be fun because it's awesome to watch their little faces light up and to feel their excitement. But as far as the actual day goes, the adults in our family much prefer Thanksgiving.

But then, we sort of consider it the "opening day" of the holiday season in general. Traditionally we do NOT go shopping on "Black Friday." We start decorating our houses on that day for Christmas, and those leftovers really come in handy when we're so busy running up and down the stairs and hauling stuff out of the attic!

I'm an American about to spend my first thanksgiving in Europe and I agree. The food is awful. I'm looking forward to skipping the turkey this year.
I'm sorry that you both apparently don't have any good cooks in your family. That must really suck.
