Atheism would imply that people take religion seriously enough to deny it fervently.
In Spain they say "pasotismo" that could be translated as "Idontgiveash.itism".
There's a certain affection, appreciation, just like the love you feel for a very old armchair.
For my part, I love the pomp, fast and history of the Catholic Church... the "message" is so absurd and surrealistic that I love it on Christmas and some festivities.
That literally isn't what atheism is at all. That seems like a passive-aggressive definition that would come from a theocratic society.

Materialism reigns in Italy too.

I read a very interesting statistic not too many years ago, comparing countries as disparate as UK, Greece and Russia.

In short, only about 5% of the population sincerely participates in Church life, and it probably has been that way since year one (the gate is narrow).

In between, the Church was part of Government, so at times much of the other 95% had to pretend. But Napoleon pretty much put paid to that in Europe about 200 hundred years ago. The rest is aftermath (these things take a little time).

I have italian friends from the most liberal part of Italy (Bologna), and they don't consider it anything outside the usual to go to Mass. They are in their 20s by the way.

Tarnowski, Poland and islands of Malta are probably up in running for the most Catholic places on Europe.

I didn't say I was Spanish, I said I am Spanish by blood. That's a big difference.

As the trend is most places in "the west" goes..... church attendance and influence continues to go down.

While the majority of the populations are still "catholic".....most do not practice.

I would say 90% of Western Europeans would feel alienated towards the religiousity of Americans. Already Neymar doing some prayer crap when celebrating goals feels disgusting.
