2. nationalistic pride-which nation would provide the brunt of leadership and funding and would soldiers of one nation be willing to receive orders from officers of another nation?
3. old national or cultural grudges-Some countries and cultures have had a long standing grudge or hatred towards one another. Put them working along the same lines and there's likely to be fighting and killing between the two sides that are suppose to be fighting together instead of each other. An extreme example is Greece and Turkey. Would you really want troops from Greece and Turkey fighting side by side under the command of one country's officers?

In the past in USA's military we've had problems with state and regional pride and cultural grudges but we were able to eventually work past that by integrating the military with people from all parts of the country. The only reason why this worked was because we all, for the most part, spoke the same language and were of the same nation. Europe is still made up of many different nations and even more languages.

I propose each member nation provide their own national guard force. The EU itself needs to come up with an EU force. They need to figure out what operational language is to be used and start off small like a special forces unit. Once the bugs are worked out with this special unit, begin working out from there to increase the number of EU forces. This isn't going to happen over night. It will take time. Will they speak English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, or some of the many other European languages?
I think NATO works just fine. It keeps the peace. The only language Europe should use is English. I like the idea of the euro and open borders in between european countries. However, beyond that I don't think Europe can ever be united the way the US is. Europeans hate each other still. Each country has a different work ethic. You have no alexander hamiliton to unite you and desperately need one.

No one trusts Russia. Not after Georgia and Ukraine. The Russians are different. Europe made them paranoid from the invasions. The cold made them hard. They enjoy eternal suffering.

Hell is cold.

When there is trouble, Europe will always run back to the US. No one trusts the Germans either. They brought down Rome and started 2 world wars. Now they try to conquer Europe with money and diplomacy. Barbarians will always be barbarians.

Regarding the language problem, how about a kind of military Esperanto? I mean, military people are not exactly poets to begin with, it would probably be easy to come up with a standardized military vocabulary in an artificial language like Esperanto.

Regarding Russia, yes, they are paranoid, but rightly so. And both Georgia and the Ukraine were after Nato's expansion beyond the borders of Germany, so the Russians have every reason to be paranoid when agreements are broken...

Russia is a dominion, an empire. The fact that is Europe is notwithstanding.

Oh, the OP was from The Express, so it never happened anyway.

Cameron's problem is that the EU has so many big issues in its lap at the moment, renegotiating with the UK is way, way down the list.

And if there's a big reception for him, and pork is on the menu, everyone won't be able to stop snig gering. (Jeez the word censor on this site is a real catch-all!)
