I don't recall anyone talking about Cyprus on this forum. I assume that it is a popular tourist destination due to its climate.

Can someone please tell me why the average person seems to like sunny/hot weather so much ?

-- I don't think Cyprus is popular here.

Not really.

From the perspective of the English-speaking world with money to spend on tourism, there are plenty of places with warm beaches that are closer and, while it does have some historical archeological sites, they are not outstanding in most people's minds compared to other, more accessible places.

Most people whom I know who go there have family ties on the island and they usually go more than once, even regularly and for family reasons. Such people live mainly in the UK and US, maybe some from countries like France and Germany.

In contrast, my understanding is that many wealthy Russians go to Cyprus on vacation and also for other reasons: according to news reports several years ago in the midst of the bank system bail-out, if I remember correctly, deposit holders in Cypriot banks with more than €100,000, mainly Russians, lost a significant percentage of their deposits over that amount.

What bale002 said, many of the visitors from Western Europe are part of the Greek/Cypriot diaspora. It is very popular with Russians too (not just the wealthy ones), when I went to Saint-Petersburg last year the travel section of a big bookstore I went to seemed to be wall-to-wall Cyprus.

Cyprus isn't crowded by tourists except in a few beach resorts though, and it's fine by me. I wasn't sure what to expect and I found some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen, especially in the Troodos Mountains. The Greek part of Nicosia is also great, Limassol too.

I've holidayed in Cyprus, Paphos to be exact, it seemed pretty geared for tourism to me, plenty of British tourists there when I went too (the usual signs up advertising 'Full English Breakfasts' and Only Fools & Horses and British football on the telly). Was very nice too, I went in November and it was still warm enough to sit around the pool.

Yeah I went all around the island, and it seemed like Paphos = British, Ayia Napa = Russians (and some Swedish and Germans), Larnaka = mixed bag, elsewhere = not many tourists.

I lived in Paphos town and then in a smaller "suburb" before building a house on the west coast north of Polis Chrysochou, for three years circa 2005. I travelled fairly often between Cyprus and Western Europe on various airlines. My impression from these years was that Paphos and Limassol were chock-a-block with English tourists. There were others, Germans and Dutch, but the Brits were the most prominent groups. And the airport and the flights certainly did not lack for tourists.

Most of it seemed to be beach oriented, I wasn't aware of a lot of touring given the number of tourists there were. Historical and archeological sites were never very crowded.

It's popular from where I live but I wouldn't say that it's the most popular. It's only an hour closer than NYC, it's very far away.

Not in the United Kingdom.
