Finland is fine. It's got a well educated workforce, highly developed infrastructure, progressive liberal values, very versatile globalized population, and is one of the few countries with a very diverse range of industries.

It just needs to find a way to compete with other countries. Think of Finland as a company.. what do you do when all your products have been out competed and one of your biggest customers has gone?

How many extraeuropean immigrants has Finland in % of the population? I guess less than in Sweden , Norway and Denmark. Good point for you. If only you could have closer ties with Russia, as in the past ...

After much ebb and flood, the Government and Trade Unions are in the process of agreeing to the 'Finland Model', where the salaries and prices will not follow the global market inflation but the surplus of our foreign trade. So if the foreign trade will have zero or a negative effect on the GDP, teachers, nurses, bureucrats and so on won't get any raise in pay. If the foreign trade balance has a surplus, the teachers, nurses and bureaucrats will get a wage-hike. This model which we have used before eliminates all possibilities of the public sector growing in expense, but leaves teachers, academics, doctors and other under the yoke of the Polish weilders working on a cruise ship.

The concept sounds very good to me, but to encounter this the Government promised tax reductions so that the state-employed people won't suffer, but that the taxation of the middle-class will be eased.

As we have had zero inflation or even deflation, the market has been impotent. Now if it's being pegged onto floating export surplus, it could have the same effect that we could slightly devaluate the Euro.

The farmers say that their income has dropped by 50% recently, and many farms are in severe financial problems. They claim that large grocery chains takes advantage of this and pay way too little, and buys additionally for example Polish agricultural goods.

This was their protest and demand immediate action.

They want sympathy from the public, and rioting is a poor method to get any.
