Is racism in the Ukraine really that bad? (places, people, black)

I have a 17 hour layover in the Ukraine and I don't want to just stay in a hotel. I'd rather go see some things, try some food--possibly meet some people. I am a black American and I've traveled to about a dozen countries and had no trouble. I'm not the type of person who sees racism at every turn. Even people who don't support interracial dating aren't exactly evil in my opinion, as long as they treat me well. I only worry about people who are disrespectful, hostile, or violent based on race. And a few friends of mine have painted a pretty scary picture. So, is it really that bad? Thanks for the input in advance.

I haven't been to Ukraine, but I"ve known black americans who've lived in Poland, Russia, Romania, etc.
Of course I've heard mixed, but some of those guys seem to live there anyways...when they could technically leave...I'd imagine on a 17-hour layover...its almost nothing.
Definitely get out of the airport, check things out, and give us some update here.
I don't think you'll have any problem. I've been to Kiev more than once and while they can be a rowdy bunch like Russians but they're both pretty high minded people.
I wouldn't go shouting about the favors the west has done for them lately though. If you want trouble you'll surely find it.
Many have never seen a live black person (there is no black people there, even white people don't wanna live there and are trying to separate), so you might get weird looks from people. Just tell em your not a Maskal and hang out in touristy places.
Given their economy you might become a victim of tourist fraud faster then racism !
