I recently made a trip through Germany and saw cities of the former East Germany completely renovated for example Dresden .But in Berlin, I saw there still areas with much soviet type of construction.-
But I think it seems even more difficult to overcome the education that the of germany youth they suffered at that time .-
The youngsters in the former GDR are better educated than in several western German states, partly because less immigration, however unemployment is still higher than in the west and many youngsters are forced to move in the west to find a job. Some western states are run down too, especially the Ruhrgebiet, Germany's Detroit if you can say so.
Education in the GDR was not bad apart from political indoctrination as far as I know.
