I hope that if the independence option wins the vote on October 1st, their so-called "independent Catalunya" will be immediatly expelled from the EU. It would set a damning precedent, any region in Europe (think Flemish or Scot separatists) could follow suit, Europe would be back to the Middle Ages when it was a myriad of helpless microstates.

And will re-admit them almost immediately.
The EU has Bulgaria and Romania, and will be losing the UK, but it will not want Catalonia?
It'd be great of Catalonia gain independence. Every people deserves to have their own country if that's what they want. I hope Scotland will gain independence in the near future as well.

You are right!! But so we go back to Middle Age.....it's convenient to come back to when was hundreds of tiny states...

Yes, but the former Catalan empire including a good chunk of France, Athens, etc.
Really, it's just to squeeze a little Rajoy's danglings...retrofeedback....

First of all, the majority of Catalans don't want the independence. And the majority voted for anti-independence parties.
Besides, the D'Hondt system gave a bit more of power to the pro-independentists and they make a slightly majority in the regional "generalitat"
In Barcelona, just about 20-25% want the independence.
Catalonia has no reasons for the independence, they never were a country/kingdom/republic... they always were part of another bigger territory. But the pro independence politicians played well their cards and show a wrong image to the world, and now many think that most Catalonians want it, while they won't.
Besides, in a hypotetical case: Catalonia would be outside from the EU (by the EU constitution) and they can't join the EU with a single NO vote. At least France and obviously Spain would never vote yes.
Oh, and the pro independence politicians claim and promise to the pro independence Catalans that they will still be a part of the EU, while the own EU president said that NOT. Besides, they keep lying to the people, and seems that many pro independence persons are brainwashed and don't judge by themselves because the own EU said that in case of an hypotetical independence of any region of an actual EU member, that country will automatically be outside from the EU!
Without counting that lots and lots of Spanish companies are based on Catalonia for obvious reasons: the best land connections with the other European countries, a big port, a big airport... the independence would put Catalonia into bankruptcy.
Actually Catalonia is the region with the biggest debt of Spain. Guess who puts funds to pay the debt... yes, the evil Spanish government.

So, if it's as you say, the problem doesn't exist. To October the people of Catalonia will vote NO!! And so end of the story!!
