When you go to the gym for a work out, do you use the shower afterward?
I've noticed that a lot of the mostly younger guys do not. Even though they are sweaty they put on their street clothes.
As an aging middle-aged guy I remember throughout high school we were required to shower after Phys Ed class. To me it's no big deal to use communal showers. Times are changing and I think a lot of younger guys refuse to get undressed or - horrors! - use the shower lest someone catches a glimpse of their junk.
A buddy of mine, also middle-aged, claims that when we were growing up during the Vietnam War era, "society" or "the government" had an interest in programming us boys into being comfortable when naked around other guys as a preparation for military conscription. I'm a bit skeptical about that theory.
My take is a lot of guys would rather shower at home because they don't want to catch athlete's foot fungus.
Personally I would rather shower at the gym and use up all their hot water!
I'm very concerned about my appearance I shower in the gym 99% barring exceptions (there was a time when I didn't choose to, owing to the cultural divide, being new in America and the like). I carry a bag with two sets of clothes, and it feels great walking out of the gym in new clothes and dried hair that is combed.
People respect you on how you appear in public. Everyone should remember that.

I always used to shower before but now that I live about 2-5 minutes walking distance from the gym I just keep my gymclothes on and walk home and shower here.
I don't think the fungus is a big issue for that many, more of an excuse. like yousaid many are afraid to show their junk. I really don't get this. We're all born naked and even if some look like **** they're not alone with it. Besides who would you be showing off to in the mens lockerroom? there just other guys there lol.
No way!! I have no idea how clean those showers are - even though they look that way. There are too many people who don't value cleanliness like I do and I don't want to catch some sort of bacteria from being at the gym. That is why I always exercise after work - I just drive back home and take my shower then. The only exception is when I swim - but I simply just rinse off to get the chlorine off - I don't actually take a full shower until I get home.
I can see the purpose for showering if you are immediately going back to work or out with friends but I have a 10 minute drive home and can take care of that then.
I almost NEVER shower at the gym. Just too many germs around.
I usually do my workout and go home. Its not like Im going to go anywhere after my workout anyway and since I am a very clean person, I NEVER smell. I'll get sweaty, but I wont get stinky. So no showers at the gym for me.
I would rather just drive home in my gym clothes and shower at home. If I chose to shower at home that means dragging all my products, blow dryers, clips, moisturisters, etc with me which is just way to much. I have a beautiful spa bathroom at home as well so why would I want to shower at the gym. This is pretty much a non issue since I usually work out at home. I did do Birkahm yoga and boy was I sweaty, but, I still went and got cappacinno in my gym clothes and drove home and I was just fine
I'm a gym rat to the utmost degree, probably having spent an average of four days a week in one for the past several years. And in all that time I have never taken a shower there. The main reason being is that I know for a fact that the cleaning products our maintenance guys use on the floors are not effective bacteriacides. So it's not that I mind being naked around other dudes--hell, I've spent a good portion of my life in lockerooms--it's just hat I'm a bit of a germaphobe and I find having athlete's foot to be a pain in the, well, foot.
I learned the most effective method of combating athlete's foot (fungus among us!) back when I played minor league baseball: and that is peeing in the shower, on and around your feet. We did it all the time back then because we were rude and arrogant jocks, but I think that doing it in a public gym would tend to get frowned upon by both staff and other members.
I do all the time since I shower during my work day...don't tell my employer!!! I usually get a 2 hour break during the day which is perfect for changing, working out, shower, and changing again. Its a hassle but its way better than working out at peak hours. I hate doing it but its that or feeling dirty for another 4 hours. Its about 50/50 where I have to shower near a complete idiot or someone who keeps looking at my junk...its great.
And saying you are a germ freak about showers and working out at a gym is just dumb. You seriously think the bars and handles of whatever machine or free weight you are putting your hands are germ free? I don't think I've ever seen any gym employee clean free weights. Most places I see have the rubber weights with an opening so you can use it as a handle. Year after year of countless hands touching the same spot time and time again...and you are a germ freak?
OK, that makes sense.
