But the interesting thing is, I've never seen a big squatter that didn't look the part. There are big deadlifters that aren't too physically huge, but not squatters.

I love deadlifts.
That may well be true, in fact yesterday I seen a pic of a small, slim female deadlifting 275.
It doesn't make sense in that there is quite a bit of squatting involved in the deadlift. About 1/2 of a full squat. Many people do not do a full squat (thighs parrallel to floor).
I had to quit doing full squats a couple weeks ago due to a very sharp knee pain.
Deadlifts for me. I have damaged vertebrae in my neck and can no longer put more than around 185 pounds on my back which renders squats almost useless for me since 185 is too light for anything other than conditioning work. Deadlifts are my favorite of the big lifts....
Have you tried front squats, instead of back squats, TX?
I voted for deadlifts. Squats come in second compared to deads.
So did I. Squats would be winning this poll if it were not for our votes. I'm surprised really.
Squats are a very good exercise, I wish I could do them without knee pain.
To this day, when I see a couple guys camped out on the squat rack for over 1/2 hour....I think.....gays working on their glutes. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
I think this goes back to a club that I used to work at. There were a couple guys who were camped out at the squat rack.....for what seemed like 1/2 of our opening hours.
I voted for deads, but Mark Rippetoe - who has forgotten more about strength training that I'll ever know - says this about squats: "There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density enhancement, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning than the correctly performed full squat."
One could easily plug that argument into one for the dead lift. Deads are tougher for me. They certainly lead to more skeletal loading due to more weight being used...usually.
Nevertheless, I'm going to have to adjust the squat rack so I can do almost full squats. And persevere....full squats kill one of my knees these days.
I have also read of squats somehow releasing more human growth hormone than other exercises.
John, make sure you stay rooted through your heels. When I allow my weight to shift to the balls of my feet doing squats it puts MUCH more strain on my knees. Just a thought.
i voted squats, but it's been a while since i've done either. i never enjoyed squats, but i REALLY hated dead lifts. good lord.
it seems like your technique must be perfect for either of these exercises, or else you'll start to really hurt. dead lift technique was always difficult for me, and that factors into my decision to say that squats are better, because they seem much easier to do correctly.
