Use to have high intensity workouts and runs with music.. I found that music made it easy. So I started without music as a motivating pace setter and initially my pace suffered. I fought through it and now I find my focus and attention to detail carries over to other aspects of life. Dropping the music while working out was best decision Ive made!

I do both. Bot ways work for me. Some workouts don't need mental toughness, some do. When I need to concentrate and focus, no music.

Are you working out indoors or out?

The main reason I go without is because I run and cycle and xc ski outside. I need to be able to hear cars and other trails users.

I do admit that the sound of my own breathing, and the birds, keep me motivated!

I workout without music - I feel like music is a hassle to set up/maintain and then worst yet, I cannot hear myself think. Without music I can think through things a lot easier. The only time music seems beneficial to me is when I am doing a project like painting a room... then for some reason it helps time pass quicker.

I never listen to music while I lift, but I would not have the motivation to do cardio if it weren't for my music.

I haven't used music in the gym since I lost my iPod years ago.

I find it easy to do cardio at a 2.0 to 2.5 mph pace in a 15% include treadmill -- and still able to read a good book, 60 minutes can seem to pass by so quick!

I almost always listen to music. I don't find it makes it hard to concentrate, at all. Nor do I find that it makes the workout "easy".

That's interesting. I cannot get by in the gym doing cardio unless I have music blaring in my ears. The music helps the time go faster for me. However, I'm a distance runner and can run for hours outside without music and love it, and in fact never listen to music outside. So, I'm with you there.

I would like to have the silence but working out in a gym full of people without music leads to being forced to listen to people's inane conversations.
