The OP gave you good advice about the weight vest. Hills, distance and speed will give you all the extra effort you need. The key thing is not to try to combine strength training and cardiovascular. Its like when you see people doing 50 reps in the weight room because they think they are toning. Your knees will give out eventually, extra weight will speed up the process.

Default Lucky me....

Well...I guess I am 'lucky'.
Guess who gets to take the same exact physical fitness exam TWICE....TWO DAYS IN A ROW for two different city agencies??
Me.
Tuesday and Wednesday
1.5 mile run....
300 meter sprint....
Illinois Agility Test....
Vertical Jump....
Push-ups....
...and as an added bonus....SIT UPS!
Yippie.....
I'm not too worried about the first one on Tuesday, but to have to do it all over again 24 hours later is gonna be rough.

I don't think it should be a problem. It's not like youre running a marathon two days in a row--then you would have a concern (albeit there are people who do just that). But if you can run 1.5 miles on Tues in the alloted time, I'd bet you can do it again on Wed.

Although every bit of info you all provided was helpful, ^^THIS^^ by jojo61397 TOTALLLLLY changed my whole mindset.

I managed to pass BOTH exams again.

This whole thing has been a life changing experience for me.
I'm down to 259 lbs.
I'm still lifting heavy, I just don't lift at all for 2 days prior to an exam.
My protein intake is through the roof with almost 230 grams daily.
My water intake has gone up---certain days 2.5 gallons--most days 1.5 gallons.
The cigs are going down too---a pack now last me 4 days.
Used to be only a day.
I'm gonna cut them out all together.
My wife promised that if I go 90 days without smoking, she'll let me go on this long range fishing trip later in the year!
{how does that work? It's my money----oh yeah---I almost forgot--she's the boss}

Thanks again for all the help!

Nice. so now the 17:37 standard is child's play for you. Try to gradually keep improving till you can run 1.5 mile in 10 min 30 sec (after a good warm up). That's a 7 min per mile pace.
