Lol, I find them comical. I was toying with the idea of getting them just to walk around in, but not for the gym. I prefer having hard, flat shoes like keds or chucks. The classics. If I had more $$ it would be nike or a pair of Jordans.
I have back and front squatted for years with a typical running style sneaker, and never had any issues. I see people here and there going shoeless. I find it a matter of personal preference.
Not for squats but for dead lifts I do and it gives me quite a bit more stability. It helps my form by making it easier to push from my heels on the pull. I may have to try them for squats.
