Anecdotally, I've heard the same, and worse: elite athletes, with extensive muscle and good cardio endurance (boxers, sprinters, swimmers), are actually at a health disadvantage. Why? Because their hearts have to work harder. So, a heavily-muscled man with a BMI of 29, who can do 100 pushups, then run 10K in 45 minutes, then again do 100 pushups, is in some sense of inferior cardiovascular health, to that of a man with BMI of 24, who can't do more than 20 pushups, and would collapse at the 40-minute mark, halfway through his pathetic attempt at a 10K run. The difference is between how well the body performs, and how hard its organs have to work.

OH_Peasant, are you basing this on any scientific research you can cite, or do these conclusions result from your own intuition?

Many professional athletes need all of that muscle mass to keep their jobs, plain and simple. I'm thinking of the big three-basketball, football and baseball.

Amateur athletes like how the pros look on TV and wannabe the same.

Same with guys wanting to emulate the beefy action heroes in movies.

Also, there's the desire to impress the opposite (or same) sex fueling the emphasis on building muscle mass.

Don't waste your money.

From the instruction manual - "The body fat percentage measured by this unit may significantly differ from actual body fat percentage in the following situations:

Children in growth stage
Elderly people
people with a fever
body builders or professional athletes
patients with osteoporosis who have low one density
women who are pregnant
post-menopausal women
people who have swelling
patients undergoing dialysis"

That eliminates a lot of people. You don't see this information listed on the box or in the advertising - it is only found in the instruction manual.
