Simply say, "If you don't mind, this is the only quiet time to myself I get, so I really don't feel like talking while working out."

I've been in a few gyms and I haven't seen anyone as clueless as this guy you described. I can't believe he's a manager too. When I see someone working out with headphones, that is a universal signal the person doesn't want to be bothered. I thought everyone knew that.

Going up to someone on a treadmill and waving your hands in their face is just idiotic Not only is it unsafe, it's not the time and place to shoot the breeze. Who wants to be distracted like that? Honestly, the behavior you describe sounds more like a 10 year brat.

Time to be blunt or go to management.

An adult should be able to use common courtesy and plain language and say "Please I am working out and do not want to have a personal conversation". Laminated stickes sounds like a Halloween costume.

Agreed- I’ve asked to be left alone and it didn’t work.

The “do not disturb” thing is odd but I’ll try it.

Would this work for you?
LOL, that is classic.

HA HA .....Your post is a humble-brag if I have ever heard one. Just wanted to let you know.
In answer to your question ,
I would keep the earphones with music and hold my hand to his face ..palm facing him. If he kept on bothering me , I would look into one of their surveillance cameras , point to this rude a$$ then still unable to hear a word he says , I would say this to him :

Do you like your job here? If so, leave me alone.

Thinking that he has already proven he is not a well balanced human , if it is just the two of you , common....get another gym why keep exposing yourself to a possible danger. A little move and a little bit of money, cheap price for your safety, if you ask me. If there are a bunch of others or a few there, plan A and follow through. I guarantee someone is waiting to take his job , and the owners If they were aware of how he is , would be incensed, and he would not be there now.

I thought you were a female , my answer is for a female. So , now you don't have much to worry about except this weirdo is bugging you. However my base answer is the same. Like your job here? if so leave me alone. .....or go to his boss , or whoever and let them know , they won't be pleased if they are , stable business people. I would not keep anyone like that.

I'd probably try setting him to counting reps or watching my form. Might as well make himself useful if he's going to be there gabbing.

He is in the locker room too?

The man has issues -the patrons should talk to his superiors - it isn’t normal and shouldn’t be tolerated.

(The people are mocking him behind his back? - it is another clue - it isn’t nice - but people use this as a defensive mechanism against the blubber mouth - preserve his dignity - he should be employed elsewhere)

I said it before and say it again: if I am the owner, GM of the club - I would let him go or transfer him to a night job - to straighten the equipment….
He shouldn’t be working with people. Sounds like a mental issue. Hope he isn’t a shooter

Bizarre and could be a profit/safety issue for all: equipment injuries, people leaving the club, etc

UPDATE

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. I took my “Please Do Not Disturb” lanyards (is that the term?) to the gym and practiced saying, “I am working out now. I can talk before the workout or after.”

But today I just scooted away whenever I heard him coming (the gym is pretty large) and the one time I had to walk by him, I just looked away and walked quickly.

So he didn’t speak to me. But he was really loud today and was talking at someone for 20+ minutes about his family.

I’ll be prepared again tomorrow.

You're making up a lot of backstory here (he's mental and a potential shooter?) and are perfectly willing to see this guy fired before he even knows that he's doing anything wrong. If his behavior is brought up and he doesn't change, then management can escalate. Being annoying isn't a firing offense.
