I have been mad about this all day. I just needed to "vent" to my wonderful City Data friends.
I've always been a thin guy. I'm 24 years old. I'm 6' and about 140 lbs. I don't look frail or unhealthy, I'm just thin.
This morning I sat down at my desk at work. A co-worker of mine had picked up breakfast burritos for everyone at the office. I was quite hungry, so I ordered 2 burriots. Mind you, they are not very large burritos, just average sized ones. I was just about to take a bite when my boss of all people walked over and said, "Oh my God," "Are you seriously going to eat both of those burritos?" "What do you weigh: like 2 pounds?" I sat there in shock as she walked back to her office. Her tone didn't even seem humorous.
It really hurt my feelings. I was born with a high metabolism- I can't help that. My thin frame is not from a lack of eating: I can eat and eat and hardly ever gain a pound. Even when I work out lifting weights, etc.. I don't gain very much weight.
I can't tell you how many times I have been called a toothpick, or some other condescending term. People have jokingly asked if I have to jump around in the shower to get wet. People have asked if I blow over when I walk through a major wind gust. I don't get it!! I'm not that skinny! When I look in the mirror, I am happy with the person I see. Sure, I'd like to put on a few pounds but I still like my body nonetheless.
I just don't understand. It is considered socially unacceptable to walk up to a fat person and call them a pig. Why is it ok to call a skinny person a twig? Are the people pointing out this "fact" about your weight trying to be witty? Are they jealous because they are uncomfortable with their own weight?
I'm with you...when I was in my late teens, early twenties...i was 6'4 and about 170 lbs. Not all that skinny...but looked skinny due to my height. I always wondered why people felt that it was ok to comment on my weight when if I had done the same to them about being fat, it would have lead to a fight.
Take heart...I'm now 30 and weigh about 210. At some point, that metabolism catches up to you!
I don't know about other people, but for me it would have to be a jealousy issue. I am the exact opposite of you - I have been fat my entire life. I eat less than 2000 calories a day and exercise routinely, but all I have to do to gain 5 pounds is eat one unhealthy thing!
It does seem unfair that we fatties can make fun of you, but I'm sure we get ridiculed much more often. So my suggestion is to just deal with it. It's kind of like how a girl can sleep with many guys and be called a [rhymes with fore], but when a guy sleeps with a lot of girls he is worshipped by his comrades... Sure it might hurt your feelings, but I don't think people are saying to hurt your feelings. Society doesn't really look down upon thin people, they are just stating the obvious.
Really, I think it's inappropriate that your boss said that. I think the weight issue is only something you can bring up when you know someone really well, a friend status kind of issue.
rotfl....that is the most hilarious story ever......I've been laughing for like 10 minutes now...

You'd better believe that you are being ridiculed much more often, usually behind your back, us skinny folks will be laughing up a storm about your weight and telling our children how you resemble Jabba...it is sad, not right but true.

As long as you pass your bigotry to your children, that's all that matters!

Thats ridiculous; your boss shouldnt be be-littling you like that. Nosy @ss bosses need to stop making judgemental comments about people. They abuse their power and act like morons.
Anyway; yes you seem very skinny...go to this website; BMI Result: Your weight is in the normal category i was so kind to calculate your height/weight before I rambled about how skinny you are and need to gain weight...Im close in height but about 2" taller and 25 lbs. heavier....I just checked mine and I'm fine.
Yes, I totally understand as I get the same treatment / comments all the time. Just last week my boss - the owner and Chef told me "You are way too thin" and I - the "Cook" wondered if I might be an insult to her restaurant? I am 5 foot and weight 88-90 lbs but strong and fit. I brushed it off and went about my work for the rest of the day. Later I thought, "Hey! I'm not the employee you have to worry about stealing the food or stuffing my mouth abuse!" I do see other employees much heavier than me eating full mountain plates at Owner's cost.
you're right.we can't say anything to an overweight person, but people have no trouble saying things to someone they believe is too thin.yes, they are jealous.just ignore the insensitive morons and enjoy eating and being thin!
As long as you are thin and fit don't worry about it. Just watch what you eat and excercise, both just as important for thin and well as heavy people. I am 5' 10" and was 135 lbs until my early to mid 30s. I always ate what ever I wanted (like burgers for lunch, trips to Denny's, plenty of beer, etc.) Then I started to slowly put on the pounds as my metabolism started to slow down. By the time I was 40 I was up to 175 or 180 and my choletorol was off the charts. When my weight got over 190 I had to do something about it. After lots of hard work I'm now running and training for a half marathon (GO TEAM!). Bottom line, it's easier to get into shape and eat well while you're young and thin.
