I've never been a runner...have just always hated it. However, I got motivated last Friday to go to the Y and try to work my way up to running a mile. On Friday and Saturday, I alternated running/walking every quarter mile...did a total of 2 miles. Then Monday & Wednesday I ran 1/2 mile, walked qtr, ran a half, etc for 2 miles.
Finally, this past Friday, I was able to run a mile non stop in 8 min, 40 sec. Is this a good time? Is it generally easy to improve your time in the mile??
I've been running for years, did cross-country in high school and in your case, under 10 minutes is good.
If you can get to where you can do sub 10 min miles for 3 miles, I consider this to be a "fit" person. Faster than that, you are going beyond basic health and fitness (which is a good thing BTW).
Hello Dear! It's sound good. If you want to be an atheletic then you would be consider some extra with timimng.I am pretty sure you will get your goals with like timimg as you want.
7:28 is pretty good for an average Joe/Jane, especially if you just started running. You must be pretty fit otherwise. Keep it up. Are you interested in running longer or do you just want to improve your mile?
Thanks everybody....another week, another few miles ran. Down to 7:28.....
No one has mentioned it yet, but it also depends on your age. I run 4.4 miles about 5 days a week at a pace of about 7:30/mile, and I'm 38. But I don't really consider myself a hard-core runner, but a "better-than-average" recreational runner.
I just started last Thanksgiving and ran 4 5K's this year and loved em. I also hated running, but my wife runs and talked me into it. But I have no ambition to run a 1/2 of full marathon. Maybe a 10K but that's probably it. I just don't have the time to train for a marathon.
You should sign up for a 5K and set that as your goal. If you can get in under 22:00, that will put you probably in the top 15% or so (from my experience). I've also noticed too in the finishing times that getting in under 21:00 puts you in an even more elite group (just by shaving a minute off).
Mine depends greatly on the length of race and outside temp that I'm running with. I did a 5K on the 4th of July at 8AM when it was cool outside and pulled off a 22:57. I ran another later in July at 6:30PM when it was around 104 degrees outside and had to slow down to 24:00, even though I had been training a lot more! My 10k time also tends to vary...I ran one in 51:50 back in April when it was nice outside, and ran one a week and a half ago in 54:39 when it was pretty hot outside.
I usually run longer distances...I did a half marathon earlier this year and ran it at 8:56/mile, and I'm training for a full marathon in early 2009 right now. My goal time is under 4 hours. I have a pretty hard time with 5k's because I'm not used to running short distances...I'd like to break 21 minutes, but that would require some real speed training.
