I'm older, overweight and out of shape and have a troublesome herniated disc that bothers me pretty much whenever I do anything. Sort of a vicious cycle.
I wondered if there was anything on Wii Fit that might help get me
1) motivated
2) would be able to do in short segments without winding up my bad back?

Wii fit is a lot of fun. not hard core exercising though. In your case it would probably work, but I am not a dr and dont know what you can and cannot do.

That being said....
If you have someone else that would do it to, it can be more fun competing.
most of the excercis are 1-3 min I think. theres a lot of yoga stretches, a lot of balance games, some aerobic exercises that I dont know if you can do (running in place, hula hoop, step, etc) and strength (which you could probably do some).

I think it would be great for you to try, depending on how bad your back is. I'm assuming you would know what you are capable of and not.

I have the Wii Fit and I think the name is misleading. It plays more like helping you become active instead of sitting on your butt. There's some challenging games to play. My family played it for two weeks and go bored with it. Seem to have lost its appeal. You definitely will NOT lose weight using the Wii Fit. I would rely more on traditionaly methods like walking, doing stairs, anything that helps get your cardio in and making it last longer than 3 minutes. The Wii has an aerobic game that once unlocked you can do it for 10 minutes. For me, I rely on my elliptical machine for a great workout. A treadmill or bike could work too. Ease into working out also, give your body time to adjust to the change. When I first got my elliptical machine I could barely be on it for like 2 minutes. Now I can do 20 minutes easily for a great workout. Within a year of dieting and excersising, I lost 50lbs.

I tried my mom's Wii fit and it really isnt much of an exercise game but just like WyattE says, it gets you off of your butt and move. The games are fun and somewhat addicting though. What Nintendo should do is create a larger Wii fit board where you have to stand in a really wide stance like youre in Yoga Warrior pose (feet further than shoulder width apart) then it would be much better.

Remember, there is a weight limit of 300lbs though. If you weigh more than that you could break it.

I have a lower back injury from a car accident a few years ago. A good weight and cardio routine helped solve that problem. Along with a gamet of stretches I do.

The only thing I would not recommend is deadlifting unless you have your form perfect.
