Hi all. We just arrived in Fairbanks and are looking for a place to live. Does anyone have first-hand experience/opinions about Walden Estates, Lazelle Estates and Birchwood Homes?

Thanks in advance,
AK in AK

I don't know where Waldon and Lazelle estates are. Birchwood is fairly new and a nice neighborhood. I used to live outside of it and my kids would go play in their park pretty often. Welcome to Fairbanks.

Walden Estates I believe was built for the military and now is on the private market. I occasionally work on a property that views one side of it. I'm not sure if it is condo style with more than one family residence per building or not, but it really is located well in Fairbanks if you like being close to shopping. The property itself is back in the woods by itself so it isn't like living in a busy area.

Welcome to Fairbanks! I don't know anything about those neighborhoods, but Fairbanks as a whole seems to be a nice place to live.

Walden Estates is built in a forested area where I used to drag my kids through on their sled in the winter-time. It is cookie-cutter housing ala Lower 48 suburbia. Here is a website for it:
Walden Estates â€Â¢ Fairbanks, Alaska

It was built for military housing (single-family homes, not condos), but as someone above said, it is open for private housing now. I did take a tour of one of the houses and they are small, but seem fairly well built. That is not permafrost land, which is good, and has great access to College Road and the Johnny Expressway. The Anne Wien elementary school is nearby, and you are just down College Road a few miles from the University.

Birchwood is near Trainor Gate road, I believe, and thus has good access also. Some of my friends built houses in that area and, again, it was done for military families.
