Hi, I just moved to Fairbanks and was wondering what the best TV and internet provider is. I'm living in the city, not outside of town, so all providers in Fairbanks are viable options. Thanks!

I believe that GCI is the largest local cable company, and for what I hear from coworkers, has the fastest broadband service. But take your time before deciding as you wait for others to respond, since I don't use the Internet to watch movies from Netflix at home. I just watch the local free over the air TV channels via a roof antenna.

ACS called me yesterday to ask me if I wanted to upgrade to a faster broadband speed, but I refused since I don't need it. Besides, nobody has any idea of what will happen to the cost of broadband service now that the FCC will start regulating the Internet.

That is bound to have an effect on our prices here in AK. If any state has the non-neutral net policies in force, it is here. Of course this is depending on what the new rules stay and which ones are implemented after the lawsuits settle.

So while you should be aware of it, it will potentially take years before the FCC rules take affect.

Agree.

By the way, I got a call from ACS a couple of days ago to ask if I wanted a faster internet service, but I refused because they wanted way too much for a speed increase ($110.00 for 10Mbps). Mine is real slow (1MB/320kbps) for $69.00. However, I will probably switch to GCI because they only ask for $59.99 for 10Mbps. Before switching I will contact ACS in case that they offer me a better deal.

You don't want to know what I pay then... I get 10mbs up/768k down, but it is unlimited, no data cap. I also get a REAL home phone and cable. But the bill is well... $250 a month including all the taxes. Remember that is phone, highest cable package, and DSL...

I am too cheap for that.

Kids and wife demand the cable... Or I wouldn't have cable at all... Because of the spotty internet and slow internet here, netflix doesn't always work either.

My wife and I don't watch cable TV, just the free over the air channels. In reality, since we don't have Netflix nor use the Internet to watch movies/, we don't need anything faster than what we have now. But maybe because the local ISP's are already anticipating the FCC rules, they have been asking their customers to upgrade. ACS does not longer provide the service we have at the moment, and that's why they have been asking me to upgrade. But for us to upgrade to the lowest and new speed of 10Mbps at an increase of nearly twice for what we pay now, makes no sense to us. That's why I will either switch to GCI unless ACS can come down from $110.00 to $58.00 to perhaps $67.00 a month.

They may end up having to up your speed for free then... I have an unlimited cell data plan that I am not ready to give up yet either. And the newer plans are more expensive.
