Most of Alaska's land is government land. You never need to go far to find some public land to be on. There's wilderness everywhere in Alaska. My own property up there abuts the Tanana state forest.

If anything, the roadside scenery along the Richardson Highway south of Delta Jct. (150 miles from FBX) is better than the Parks Hwy which passes Denali. Whatever you do, don't just drive to "Denali Park" (the town, aka glitter gulch) and think you've seen the park! Also, don't forget to take a drive out the Steese Hwy to Eagle Summit northeast of Fairbanks. That's a very cool area (tundra and relavively gentle mountains) that people don't seem to talk about much.

If I remember right, in spring you can drive much further out the Denali Park Road than in summer when the shuttle buses are running. Contrary to previous posts, you are more likely to see a wide variety of wildlife along the park road than along other roads in the state. This is mainly because of the open tundra environment, but also because of tightly controlled road traffic and the lack of hunting pressure in the park.

You will have no shortage of things to see and do during your time in Alaska.

Yes, it's is pretty cool. We were up in December and plan to go back next month when we go up for the Ice Carving Championships. Photos of our trip to Chena Hot Springs here:

Seldoviadad is right. You will see moose right at UAF, and every now and then there will be signs posted on campus warning you about bears nearby

I will be studying at University of Alaska in Fairbanks in the spring of 2011 and was looking ahead a bit to some places to visit while I am there. I was curious if there are any national parks near Fairbanks that I should check out? Also I really want to visit Denali National Park for a weekend and figured I would go there by train, but it seems the trains don't begin running until May? If that is true, what would be the best way to reach Denali? Thank for very much for any help or suggestions.
The trains run all year long, but they are shut down to a Saturday going North for passengers, and Sunday for going South.

You will find that Alaska will keep you busy with exploring. Learn to fly, and the whole place opens up!

Well unlike some here now and then, I have to use my plane...

There have been some pretty horrific crashes, down below is photo of by far the worst to date, happened this last October...

I think this was one of Captain Crunch's relitives... Pretty sad...

You will have to scroll down because I didn't want the photo to catch you off guard before you had a chance to decide to see it or not.....

Was sad day, low clouds and no operational instraments...

I think that was from the "Black Sheep" side of the family and CC won't want to talk about it...

I think Met has a full IFR flight panel and does't fly that low, so it wouldn't be her. Besides, I think she has duel 20MM cannons and would have just blown the pole out of the way..
