Never understood the allure of a diamond, I prefer emeralds, sapphire or rubies.
I agree. The engagement ring I picked out is a gorgeous deep blue sapphire set in white gold. It's lab-created so I don't have to worry that anyone suffered so I could have something sparkly on my hand. It's very different than the diamond solitaire in yellow gold that my fiance was thinking of. I don't think he minded the smaller price tag though. I suppose many women would be appalled to have my ring as their engagement ring, but I adore it!

If it makes you happy, then thats all that really matters!
I don't know much about rings, I had a VS1, 1 1/4 ct solitaire. I thought it was beautiful, but to me, I was just excited I thought I had met the perfect love ...

Meh, my ideal engagement token is an Irish claddagh, no gemstone at all. To each, her own.
I searched high/low in and around san antonio, and not to sound cliche, but "he went to Jared's."
I found a good diamond that was "good enough" for me, and I was set on getting it, but it was only IGI certified. After doing some research I found that IGI certifications are "loose" for lack of a better word.
Jared's has their "online vault" that contains GIA certified diamonds. I sat with a rep and gave a little on size for much higher cut/clarity. Found a "D" colorless, VS2, .33 carat diamond for a great price. Upon arrival it looked amazing! It may not be a "radiant, leo, or celebration" cut, but from the 50+ diamonds i've viewed closely, it is much more vibrant.
So thanks to all who have given advice! This was a heck of a challenge to find the perfect stone, but to me I honestly am proud of what i've found.
so beginning to shop for an engagement ring and I had a question.
what's the average/nowaday size of a diamond wedding ring?
to put it in perspective, my girlfriend won't care at all about the size, it's the meaning behind having a ring on her finger.
that being said, I don't want her girlfriends to be making fun of her/me for having a ring that doesn't compare to others.
so should I be looking for 1/4 ct, 1/2 ct, 1 ct......? Just wondering what the norm is out there.
Young and upcoming couple, so i'm not trying to break the bank now, throughout the years I would definitely consider upgrading.
The stone size/ring price should reflect 3 mos. of the gentleman's income unless the ring is a family heirloom. Quality over quantity when it comes to size of the stone and the ring setting.

Yeah, I tried that line on my husband and he laughed in my face.

Wow! That's even going beyond what the deBeers cartel tries to shove down people's throats.
Where does the obligation of the groom to spend three months' income on an engagement ring come from?
White gold, its much less expensive.....dont jump on that platinum bandwagon just because its popular.
If you go for platinum, then you will also have to get a wedding band made of the same metal, as there is a difference in color.
