I can wear silver without any problems and that is the only one. Anything gold under 18k can make my ears sore unless I wear them only for an evening. You can paint the backs of your earrings with a clear nailpolish so you don't have to toss them. Make sure you cover the whole back of the post and anything that rubs on your lobe.
Since you know its not the nickel, maybe its copper or zinc? Try some real copper earrings and see if that bothers you.
I can't figure it out.It may seem petty but I love earrings and I can't wear them.
I can't wear any kind of earrings. Even my rings are starting to bug me. I wore a really nice watch for a day (think it was DKNY or Guess) and I have welts all over my skin. I am also going to a dermatologist.
I also love earrings because I think you can really make a statement with them..and there are so many pretty and crazy styles out there.
I have the same problem... just because earings say they are xk gold doesn't mean the POST (that part that goes through your ear) is.. Most earings the post is made up of a combination of metals - makes it stronger.
When you buy earings - go to a REPUTABLE jewler who may "charge"more - but you will get better earings that you can wear. I have two pairs of earings - EXPENSIVE ones..
Maybe there is more than one kind of hypoallergenic metal for earrings?
I developed a reaction on my ring finger in which I tend to get a rash under it. It is platinum. I suspect it is caused by certain cleaning products getting trapped under there and causing a problem. I doubt if you're using your ear lobes to scrub stuff though, right?
One thing you might try is to soak your earrings in a warm water baking soda solution. You could also give them a scrub with an old toothbrush and baking soda. I've heard it will neutralize the metal. Couldn't hurt.

The posts won't be solid gold, they'd be too soft. They'd have to be a plated alloy.
So that's the problem then. Thanks. I will update with what the dermatologist says.
