Er, no, not that simple. Wigs made out of synthetic fiber can't be blow-dried, or treated the same way as natural hair wigs. Natural-hair wigs -can- be played with, however often the fit needs to be adjusted and regular salon hairstylists are not *usually* qualified or trained how to do that (some are qualified and trained but this isn't very common).
You should see if there's a wig shop in the area, and ask them if they do on-site styling. If they do, then go to them, and have them help you select something suitable for you and fit it properly. Definitely go with real hair if you're planning on wearing it daily for an indefinite period of time per day. Synthetic is good if it's for short-term (less than 3 months) and you're not planning on wearing it more than a few hours daily.

Actually. This is not entirely true. There are synthetic wigs that are not terribly expensive and can be heat-styled (up to 410 or 420F). I've bought a few from CosCom's wig shop.
Also, regular salon stylists - most of them at least - started their training on wigs. Human hair and synthetic.
Also, while human hair wigs are "better" for styling... they don't keep as well as synthetic wigs. I have several (synthetic) wigs that I styled years ago and they still have their shape (and spikes) even despite getting wet. I've also worn a styled synthetic wig for up to 18 hours at a time with no problem. Best thing for someone who's never styled a wig before, is indeed to go to a wig shop and have them sell you one, then cut and style it for you. It's generally more expensive that way... but at least it's being styled by somebody who knows what they're doing. ((You could always try your hand at cutting and styling a wig. The results at first won't be optimal, but practice makes perfect))
I've been styling my own wigs for 10 years now.
