Do women generally prefer that guys wear sandals with shorts? (girl, look)

I started wearing sandals awhile back. I was bracing myself for negative comments but surprisingly received some compliments from women that I know. My last girlfriend said she preferred sandals with shorts also. Is this unusual? As long as the guy takes care of his feet, do women actually prefer sandals (or flip flops) on guys with shorts? There seems to be more and more guys wearing them these days.
Most any sandal looks fine and certain casual shoes but always no socks! I don't like flip flops at all. I think they're dangerous, especially when worn around the pool or any other wet area.

Yeah, I learned a long time ago, it's not a good idea to wear them on a boat. I don't think most sandals look good on men. The ones nowadays are too clunky looking.
Are sandals a trend or are they here to stay? They seem to be extremely popular these days...much more than they were years ago. I did some shopping at Target yesterday and looked around, and it seemed like everybody in the store was wearing sandals or flip flops. Is the stigma pretty much gone that guys who wear them are seen as feminine?
I pretty much only wear mine when I go shopping or run errands, but would like to wear them more often. In what situations is it appopriate to wear sandals and what situations are they inappropriate? For example, the following situations:
Festival
Dinner at a restaurant (typical restaurant, not a high end place)
Ballgame
Bday Party
BBQ
Concert
My husband wears Chaco sandals (those things are not cheap either!)..and he wears them alot. At first I hated them because I just didn't like the way they look plus I like flip flops on guys but what can I say, the sandals have grown on me and they really fit my husbands personality. He only wears them with shorts or his convertable pants that can unzip to shorts.
If a man is going to wear sandals, take off the socks! Ick! Groom your feet! At least, wash them, and trim your nails!
I don't mind sandals, but socks and shorts do NOT go together!
