I agree with once you have kids. I would hate to see a mom bend over to pick up her child in short shorts (seems trashy).
If you're a mom just don't wear short shorts around your kids. Or buy 4 inchers. J crew sells shorts in many different lengths: 2in, 4in, 6in, and 8in.
I worked at a daycare in the summer and when we took the kids to the park on a hot day, I would be in my 4inch jcrew shorts. Long enough so they don't scream BOOTY but short enough so they don't look like mom shorts.

As long as her butt cheeks aren't hanging out, I don't see what's so bad about a mom wearing shorts around their kids.

3 inches don't look as short-shorts.
I guess short-shorts are like 1 inches like the ones of american eagle or hollister. My wife looks good on them.
I stopped wearing them when I was 18 or 19... and I haven't worn shorts or skirts above knee length since.
My legs are decent and I have a 35" inseam so they're decently long, but I'm pale and don't have porcelain skin...I have slightly transparent peachy skin which looks gross in the sunlight, plus I've had cellulite and blue spider veins since I was in my early teens. So, to spare everyone the horror, I wear knee length capris, pencil skirts or long pants
As for what age, I think it depends on what you look like. If you have the body, go for it without any age restrictions.

...Over weight women are usually desparate ,any thing that will snag a hook, where as women that have worked hard to develop their design usually put an equal expectation on a man's value ,and rightly so...
EXCUSE ME? Who are you to say that "over weight women are usually desparate"...what nonsense.
To get particular, yes, it's the "butt cheeks" thing that looks trashy, unless you are at home, at the beach or on a boat, etc.
When I say you should be going for classy, that is not "woman bashing"...As a feminist, I believe that woman can do anything they choose to. The OP's question was subjective, as in "should" and my answer stands. That has nothing to do with what men think, it's about self-respect and ... class. There is a way to wear shorts -- as the women who accused me of needing to go back to the 50s described herself, it sounds like her shorts were much more in line with what I was talking about ... cuffed, nice top, rather than the daisy dukes with the butt hanging out (no matter how great the butt), it just seems that the woman who wears that type of thing out in public -- no matter how great her body is -- must be needing the attention, and needing to be TOLD how great her legs/butt/body is...a little mystery goes a long way...IMHO

Well, there you go. I have about 50 lakes within one hour in all directions. It's very very common to see it. The lake taverns (NOT "clubs" "bars") are full of them when it's 95+ degrees outside.
I don't think super short shorts are practical. For example, I have leather seats in my car. OWWWW!
Or the horrible cloth seats we have on our "subway" I definitely want to limit my bare skin exposure to public transit seats. After you factor out environmental factors, it looks like the pool or the beach is really the only place to wear them.
