I find it interesting that dressing up is considered by some to be too "conformist". How could it be "conformist" when the large majority dresses casual?
I'd rather look rude than look blindly conformistic; and when some idiot in the three-piece suit tells you how to dress, at your own non-tax-deductible expense -- I call it conformity of the lowest and most senseless form.
I do not really like to "dress up". To me "dressing up" is wearing a dress or suit, pantyhose, and heels. So I don't really like to dress up.
But, I also don't want to go out in public looking like I just fell out of bed either. Alot of people go out in their PJ's and a t-shirt to the park or market or Wal-Mart. That just is lazy in my opinion.
I dress up about 70% of the time (70% of the way). I regularly wear skirts/dresses/cardigans as my typical uniform. If I am going casual, I make those pieces softer (like tee shirt, ponte, or knits).
It is funny, I see people when I am out on the weekend, and they ask: why are you dressed up. But to me, wearing a knit cotton dress is equally as comfy as the hypothetical yoga pants and t-shirts. And requires a lot less energy to match.
All I have to say is I am really happy the ponte knits are back. Best fabric ever. Feels like sweats, looks like you are polished.
On the other hand, the odds of me wearing heels out and about are 5%. Those are just not practical if you plan on walking a few miles or standing all afternoon.
One thing I like about the hipster trend (well some of them anyway) is that the guys are getting dressed up!
Not in my home. I wear a dress to work most days in warm weather. Love them. My son, who is 20, prefers to wear a suit/tie to any event where it is an option.
We have always dressed nicely. We like to present ourselves to others in the best possible light, when we can.
