Absolute crap. There really is no need to buy cheap these days as all the brand name stuff eventually goes on sale to lower prices anyway. Why pay regular price for crap when premium can be had for cheaper?
My thoughts on Payless are these, beginning with the pros:
Very affordable merchandise
Friendly, helpful employees
Interesting sales throughout the year
Now the cons:
Cheap shoes! The best brand they have is Champion (I have a few pairs that have lasted more than a year, and they bear the Champion name)!
The winter boots they sell are only good for keeping your feet warm. They do not, I say, they DO NOT keep out moisture! I have a pair that I'm popping into the trash as soon as Spring officially arrives and stays (temperature/weather-wise that is)
Payless is found in just about every shopping mall/strip mall you can think of. Even some high-end shopping centers have a Payless! This store quickly gets boring just by seeing it everywhere you go!
Store selection isn't that great. I can find what I'm looking for in my size, but I'm a girl who loves a very extensive array of multi-colored shoes, so my best bet of finding the best colors is by going to the Payless website, AND PAYING SHIPPING! XP
Personally, I don't mind Payless, but if I am in the need for good shoes at a great price, I'll shop at either Shoe Carnival or Famous Footwear, or even DSW.
Under normal wear, shoes bought at Payless will usually disintegrate within weeks.
When I buy shoes, I usually pay for quality. Not for a brand, but for quality. I've worn my North Face hiking shoes to death - bought them in 2007, have frequently worn them through Minnesota winters, gotten them soaked with water and clogged with mud many times - and they're still very functional, despite looking fairly beat up. I'm on about my fifth set of laces (and I buy good laces), but the toe of the shoe is solid, the bottoms have not peeled away (though they have worn away in places - no getting around that), all the laceholes with their rims are intact, and the loops at the back for pulling them on haven't broken yet.
My Keene's are just as old, and fully intact, even the binding (a classic weak point in such a design).
These are just a pair of my shoe inventory. They cost into the three figures (though not very far in). In the end, I pay far less for shoes than if I shopped at Payless - and I get more comfortable, better looking, more functional footwear to boot! (pun fully intended! )
I will not shop in a shoe store that smells like a plastics factory! That's the first thing I think of when I've been in there. Better to save money and buy off 6pm.com or something.
I'll be the first and only person to say I like some Payless shoes and just picked up a 2nd pair of flats there just the other week.
I've bought shoes from there since high school and while some can be uncomfortable, I've found comfy shoes that lasted me 5+ years with no problems. I've had shoes that lasted longer. I think what makes them last is not wearing them everyday.
Also, I have bought shoes from places like DSW for $40- $50 more which appear to be made from the same materials, same comfort and some lasted much less.
And I get lots of compliments on my cheap Payless shoes. No one ever knows!
