I am not a fan of the puffy vest. although it can be useful worn under a winter jacket for extra warmth. that is how I got this vest, part of a 2 piece winter coat from North Face. the top layer has frayed fabric, and could still be used as a rain jacket, I chucked it and bought another. But I kept the vest.
now , I can wear the vest over a wool sweater or a sweat shirt, when the weather is in the 50's, It will keep me warm. But does this look work for a grown man? would this combo make me look "broke" , like I only have half a coat? or like some criminal in the need of changing colors quick? Maybe I am trying too hard?
My style tends towards a nicer class of American Workwear (think Filson, Orvis, etc... natural materials) so I'm not a fan of puffy anything.
But, I am a fan of vests. They look good as a layer, do *not* make a person look broke or like they couldn't afford a whole jacket. If you're doing the active-wear style, it works fine.
The next question though, is do you wear it all day or treat it like a jacket and remove it when inside?
We see down vests and jackets worn by everyone here in the PNW. If it is functional, I'd encourage you to wear it if it fits.
If you have to dress professionally in your career, then you would probably not wear it unless the heat failed in your office in the dead of winter. But for knocking around town, or brunch, or driving to mom's, sure. Why not?
