If you are basically frumpy and dumpy, no two-piece swimsuit is going to look really great. On the other hand, for whatever my opinion as a straight woman is worth, I think Kidman looks like a skinny 12-year-old in that suit and not my idea of an "incredible physique."
Nichole Kidman is a beautiful woman but that bathing suit, and the ungainly shot, did a good job of making her look frumpy.
Yes, I've never understood the appeal of a high waist. They just make the upper body look very short and cut-off. As far as the bottoms? They're no wider in the crotch than any other bathing suit bottom, and probably don't cover that much more in the back. And it could easily fall off if one of the straps comes undone.
I LOVE this cute, feminine bathing suit Nicole Kidman is wearing. I hope this style makes a big comeback. More flattering to more women than a sleazy bikini. No chance of it falling off either!
A. That's offensive you are calling bikinis sleazy.
B. You have to be super skinny and have a perfect body to pull off those retro styles.
C. Those retro styles mostly have Brazillian bottoms so they are skimpy from behind.
Just because there was a lot of fabric doesn't mean a lot of people can pull it off.
Plenty of normal women wore retro bathing suits and had no issues. Truthfully I prefer my women a little more like pin up girls. A little meat on the bones is fine.
B sort of does make sense. On a lot of "average" bodies, those bottoms are going to end up looking frumpy dumpy.
I think it does more for "less than perfect" types, albeit you can't be totally huge. Honestly that style looks better IMO on a figure more full than Kidmans.

Everything you said! ^^^
Hi waisted bathing suits - or jeans - flatter no one.
Although Nicole Kidman is not very well endowed, I would STILL be worried that one of those very skinny straps would come undone.
It's an ungainly suit, and it makes Ms. Kidman look disproportionate.

Every person is different. Not everyone is proportional with respect to the upper and lower body. I have a long upper body and shorter lower body, so something that shortens my upper body is not a negative. I have plenty of room in the torso as it is.

I live at the beach, and I pray to God that does not make a comeback! You leave our thongs alone lady! They don't fall off either. You ever see how tight those things are wedged in? They ain't going nowhere!
Poor thing looks like she needs a good meal or two, but the TV & movie folks have a tendency towards skinny. It's a nice swimsuit, I'm glad she's not running around with floss for a swimsuit like some folks seem to try.
