About to acquire a new Eddie Bower oversized throw that was on sale. They shipped it nearly a week ago, and it is to arrive this week. Question: Would you wash it before using or not?

Whether the down item is something you wear or throw on your bed the discussion on your other thread still applies. Review the thread about the coat. The down itself was sanitized before using it as filling and the casing was handled and sewn months ago. The throw was bagged and packed days ago...active virus load inside the box is nil. Put the shipping box in a closet for a few days or spray it with disinfectant if you feel you must open the box immediately. There's no reason to wash the throw before using it.

The down itself was also sanitized before using it as filling and that probably happened months ago.

Remove Covid, I was talking about just in general, whether or not folks washed a throw or blanket if purchased new or just start using it once received?

I would wash it, or have it dry cleaned.

There are chemicals, including formaldehyde and dyes, that can get into the bedding at the factory and will irritate your skin.

Sometimes manufacturers will put on the packaging or tags to wash before use.

Nothing to do w/Covid but agree that there are so many chemicals - I wash everything I can before using.

You DON'T wash "down."

EVER.

EDIT~ Dry clean if it's horribly dirty, but never water and soap.

Actually, there are washing instructions right on it. They recommend a non-agitator type washer and a dryer with low heat to get the job done. I have washed small down throws in the past successfully. The keys to success are gentle or hand washing with mild detergent and then fully drying. If not fully dry, there will be a smell.
