I have ALWAYS thought a close beard is HOT. Not really a fan of the bushy kind...but to each their own.

I grew beards in the late 80's and early 90's and they definitely were out of style at that point in time. It seems to me that many more men have beards now. I see a lot less mustaches now compared to the time period I mentioned.

Beards are vermin farms. You're better off licking your dog than having a beard.

I think it all reflects more casual times, fashion wise. The pandemic, and the rocky economic situation, probably accelerated that trend.

1970s casual style is big right now. That Fleetwood Mac vibe.

"Vermin Farm" was the name of my Animals punk tribute band. Our rendition of "It's My Life" re-worked as "Bugger Off" totally slayed.

There are some guys with beards now who aren't treating it casually or sloppily, though. Their beards are *styled*--they use products and see barbers and are very much using facial hair to show personality and style.

I haven't been clean shaven in many years. I prefer to have two or three days of growth.

Same here. The Letterman look was disgusting, imo.

We don't see many free-standing mustaches though, do we? Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot are a few hangers-on.

Yeah, I was thinking one did not see as many in the '80s and into the '90s, too. At least where I lived and travelled in the U.S. at that time. Then goatees made a comeback and beards of all kinds quickly followed.

But they have been commonplace everywhere I have lived in the U.S. (Upper Midwest, West Coast) since then (of all types).

The men I know who have beards don't have them because they're in or out of fashion. They've had them for years. They either like them, people have told them a beard looks good on them, so they keep them. A few grow a beard to protect their faces during winter but shave them in summer. Once again, fashion of the moment had nothing to do with it. I like beards on some men but not others. I don't tend to like that deliberate 3 day stubble look but it really comes down to the person. Yet again, what happens to be fashionable doesn't enter into my opinion.
