OMG, and all this time I've been mixing my Walmart workout clothes with the Nikes I got at Goodwill! How will I EVER be able to hold my head up at the gym again?
IMHO, if you wish to present yourself as a bona fide knowledgeable athlete you wear the brand of shoes, pants, shirt, jacket or whatever that functions best for you, not anyone else. The labels may or may not match. If what you want is to present yourself as a label snob, go ahead and match everything regardless how well the pieces work. And leave the price tags on them for good measure.

For example, if I want to wear Addidas track pants with Fila shoes, is that fashionably acceptable?
Acceptable...to whom? In what context?

Exactly. I mix athletic wear all the time. I frankly couldn't begin to "G" less of a "F" (as the kids today say) as to who thinks what of it.
