True, but having ink on it pushes it into the scary zone.

NOBODY is original and not getting a tattoo is NOT counter-culture. Out of my close group of friends, I'm one of only 2 who has a tattoo, out of probably 30 or so people. Not everyone does it to fit in or jump on a bandwagon.
Your social circle is unusually non-tattooed.

It doesn't matter, her point remains.

Tattoos are not a social statement anymore because they are no longer a sign of counter culture. OTOH, neither is not having one.

The typical tattoo, something on the shoulder, back, leg, etc is the equivalent of getting the top of one's ear pierced. Not something everyone does but not noteworthy. Extreme tattoos, like those on the face, are like more extreme piercings.

At least it would be more interesting than just plain old wrinkles. Give them something to talk about at the old age home.

I was told I'd be in a wheelchair by the time I was 25, and likely dead by the time I was 50...the fact that I'm now 30 and still walking and relatively healthy is amazing. Yes, I'm heavily tattooed, and if I make it to the point where I'm old and wrinkled I'll be so happy, considering that was almost taken away from me.

Maybe people need to put things into perspective. I'd find it sad if you were that focused on looks at that age.

Even though I don't really like tattoos if she has to have any I hope they're hearts and something pretty and not something like a black widow tattoed between her breasts.

It's you.

I don't care for tattoos, either - I just lack overweening self-absorption that compels some people to convince themselves that their subjective tastes are, in fact, objective truths. But they're not. They're just preferences.

It cracks me up when people pontificate about staunchly mainstream ideals as "counter-culture."

I also crack up when people pontificate about being "non-conformist" but they dress in the uniform of the millions of other "non-conformists" - like the city hipsters complaining about suburbanites.
