Hi,
I'm new here and I apologize if someone has already answered this question.

Hubby and I are considering a relo to NW Arkansas (within commuting distance of Bentonville), and are trying to figure out what our living expenses would be. Is there a general rule of thumb as to how much real estate taxes are (i.e. 1.5% of appraised home value)? Are rural areas less than the city properties?

Also, what other taxes will we incur, such as personal property tax to register our vehicles, and state income tax?

Coming from Texas--no state income tax, no personal property tax, just relatively high real estate taxes (about 2.7% of appraised value).

Anything else useful you can offer would be greatly appreciated, like how is the traffic if we would live further out, are there typically homeowner association dues, etc.

Thanks to everyone- it's a great forum and I will post things as I can to help over in the Texas forum.

Northwest Arkansas may seem to many as one metroplex, but is actually a complex set of individual cities towns and village. You need to be more specific about where in NW AR you are planning on living. Are you moving to Fayetteville and it's bedroom communities? Are you moving to Roger/Bentonville/Bella Vista and it's apendages? Are you moving to Springdale/Tontitown/Behtel Heights (central NWA)? Or are you moving to an oddball community like Siloam Springs or Huntsville?

Rural areas tend to be less than the cities. I have a house in a rural town in NWA, 1200 SF home, 1/3 acre lot, ranch-style from the 1960's, so it's older and less expensive than most homes being sold. My property taxes run about $600 a year (it's built into my mortgage so I don't have the exact figure) and then there's the Homestead credit of $300, so taxes on the house run about $300/year.

The personal property tax on my 2001 SUV was slightly over $100 last year, and renewing registration was $27.50.
